Linux is an open source operating system created by Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki. The kernel at the heart of all Linux systems is developed and released under GNU General Public License and its source code is freely available to everyone. There are now literally hundreds of companies and huge number of individuals who are working on enhancing linux kernel, drivers and applications. The giants of the computing world have embraced linux and its ongoing developement. More than a decade after its initial release, real-time versions of Linux have been adopted worldwide primarily as a server platform for running secure and powerful applications.
Linux is built and supported by a large international community of developers and users dedicated to free, open-source software. This community sees Linux as an alternative to such proprietary systems as Windows and Solaris, and as a platform for alternatives to such proprietary applications as MS Office, Internet Explorer and Outlook. As a result of this community, there is a very large collection of free software available for Linux. There are graphical environments (GUIs), office applications, developers' tools, system utilities, business applications, document publishing tools, network client and server applications -- the list goes on.
The best part of this community is open source. This means there is no barrier to entry; for any given problem, there are generally several applications that solve the problem. These applications can also borrow the best parts from each other to become even better. Linux is about freedom and choice,so you have plenty of freedom to choose -- and until you have experience with Linux, it is almost impossible to decide which of the many Linux distributions best fits your needs.
"That's what makes Linux so good: you put in something, and that effort multiplies. It's a positive feedback cycle."
--- Linus Torvalds
